Cleaning Antiques

Antique GownAntique items often have sentimental and monetary value. DLI highly recommends asking customers about their expectations on how the item should look after cleaning. This is also a great time to describe your concerns. Some questions to keep in mind are:

  • How old is the item?
  • Are there any unusual stains or damaged areas?
  • Are repairs or reinforcement necessary?
  • Where has it been stored and for how long?
Tips for Success
Remove all trim and reinforce any weak seams. Test for colorfastness. Most items can be drycleaned, however you may need to hand wash some items depending on fiber content.

When finishing antique items avoid using high heat. Use a hand iron at the lowest setting if there is any doubt about the garment's performance.
