Q: I cleaned a dryclean-only sequined dress in a net bag on a short cycle and all the sequins were removed. What went wrong?
A: The sequins were held onto the fabric with a solvent-soluble glue. When the item was drycleaned, the glue softened and the sequins fell off. Test the glue prior to cleaning by placing a drop of solvent on top of the glue in an unexposed area. Allow the solvent to penetrate the glue. Gently try to move the sequin with your fingertip. If the sequin moves at all, or the glue becomes tacky, it is not safe to clean the item. If the sequin does not move or the glue does not become tacky, then the item may be cleaned as usual.
