Lava Stains

Q: My customer brought in an outfit with oily-looking goop on it. She told me that her lava lamp tipped over and the "lava" spilled onto her clothes. How do I proceed?

A: Lava lamps contain paraffin wax, Glycol, and dye. To remove, first treat the oily components with volatile dry solvent and oily-type paint remover. Remember to flush the oily-type paint remover from the fabric with volatile dry solvent.

Proceed to the wetside, starting with neutral synthetic detergent and ammonia or protein formula. If the stain remains, try acetic acid or tannin formula. If that doesn’t work, try using a drop of rust remover. A reducing bleach may be used as a last resort. Test for colorfastness before using any stain removal agent.
