Mirror Trim

Q: I cleaned a dress with beautiful silver trim on the neckline. After cleaning, the trim was no longer silver. In fact, it looked like plain, clear glass. What happened to the trim?

A: Like trims some stones are coated on the reverse with a metallic finish similar to paint. This coating is what gives the trim its silver appearance. A gold finish can also be used to create a gold appearance. Some of these finishes are removed during drycleaning, causing the clear or colorless appearance. Although it is virtually impossible to restore stones that have lost their coating, some cleaners have reported successfully repainting the backs of stones, thus restoring the silver or gold appearance.
