Production Standards

ascending graphAre you experiencing high payroll costs, low productivity, or poor quality? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you might find some improvement in establishing production standards for each production station.

Do your employees know how many of each type of garment you expect to be finished per hour? How much would you do if you didn’t know what was expected?

In far too many plants the hours are stretched to meet the available work. Without a goal to meet, most employees will probably not be fully productive.

It is not a good business practice to establish production standards when you can’t show the employee how to attain them. The following sequence should be performed for establishing production standards:

1. Determine the best possible method for doing the job with the equipment available.
2. Train the employee in that method.
3. Establish a standard for the job.

When this sequence is followed, higher productivity and better quality usually follow.

Technical Operating Information Bulletin #674 in DLI's Drycleaning Encyclopedia App offers a much greater degree of information on this topic, including specific production figures for each department. Drycleaning Encyclopedia access is included free with DLI Silver, Gold, Premier and International memberships.
