“Spot Clean Only” Care Label

Q: I received a garment that had a care label stating “Spot Clean Only.” Is this a valid care label? How should I handle this garment?

A: The Federal Trade Commission considers this a valid care label. The label says that the garment cannot be immersed in a solvent. This may be due to the trim that is part of the dress design. The label indicates that only localized stain removal procedures should be used. This may be difficult or impossible to do without leaving rings on certain fabrics. Local stain removal may also cause rings on garments by disturbing the dyes or sizing.

It would be a good idea to discuss the possible problems with your customer before proceeding.
