Makeup stains from Halloween costumes, lipstick, mascara, and foundation consist of a fat, oil, wax, or grease and something that gives it color. These combination stains may be more difficult to remove because they often require dryside and wetside agents.
Each stain removal agent should be tested for colorfastness and damage before using. Work over a towel to monitor the stain's movement as the towel will absorb the staining matter. Use each agent until the stain stops moving.
Use the following stain removal agents in this order to safely remove a combination stain such as makeup:
- volatile dry solvent (VDS)
- oily-type paint remover (OTPR)
- VDS; steam
- neutral synthetic detergent
- ammonia or protein formula
- 28% acetic acid
- rust remover
A reducing bleach may be used to remove final traces. Remember, using bleach is always a final solution. Test for colorfastness before using. Thoroughly flush all agents from the fabric and dry completely before cleaning.
We wish you the best with this challenging procedure. Our Stain Removal App can provide English and Spanish instructions on how to remove any stain.
